Show Name: The Home

In the impoverished, post-war London of the 1950s, seven-year-old Uma lives with her brothers and her working-class parents; Ronnie and Shahine. When Uma is removed from the family home by the state and placed indefinitely in a rural, convalescence home, a personal odyssey begins. Uma must contend with the formidable Sister, racist bullying and a hostile environment. Cut off from her family; armed only with her trusty teddy bear; Uma will learn a new meaning for the word home. Writer Gill Parsons is a retired lecturer and magistrate. The Home was developed from her own lived experience as a child. Co-created by Claire Coaché and Lisle Turner, the artistic directors of Hereford’s own Open Sky, the work combines new writing with physicalised performance, object manipulation, sound design and music, from both past and present. Open Sky are a multi-award-winning production company specialising in the interface between live theatre and technology. The Home was developed as part of Courtyard Hereford’s Writing Room Extra that is delivered by Lisle Turner on behalf of Feral Productions. Suitable for ages 12+. Written by Gill Parsons Directed by Claire Coaché & Lisle Turner Produced by Kama Roberts Designed by Ioana Curelea Sound design and composition by Tic Ashfield Lighting Design by Sophie Moore An Open Sky Production.

Performer Name: Open Sky Theatre

Open Sky creates new digital theatre, physical theatre and film for audiences around the world. We work from our base underneath rural Herefordshire’s wide open skies. We tour work digitally, locally, nationally and internationally with a strong commitment to representing and reaching audiences traditionally excluded from the cultural narrative. We love to collaborate with local, national and international artists. We originate our shows both independently and in collaboration with a wide range of partners and third-party commissioners. We are constantly testing the limits of what it is possible to create by combining live performance with new technologies and new routes to audiences. We share our passion for making art with our local and national community via teaching, mentoring and regular community-led productions. We’re an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, which means funding thanks to taxpayers plays a huge part in supporting our work. This responsibility informs our work ethic and strong commitment to excellence. Our work is for everyone so we are determinedly and actively anti-oppression and pro-inclusivity.
