Performer Name: Band y Braichmelyn

Show Name: Ceilidh/Twmpath

Show Description

A ceilidh (or 'twmpath' in Welsh) is an informal, friendly folk dance event suitable for many different kinds of parties and celebrations! Our caller will explain the dances (in English, Cymraeg, or bilingual, as appropriate) and walk you through them before the band plays the music for you. Smiles all round are practically guaranteed! Our normal band line up is button accordion, bass, guitar and/or banjo, although we can usually include other instruments (e.g. fiddle) on request. The music does not have to be as loud as a disco, which is one of the reasons that ceilidhs are so popular at family events. The music is normally a mixture or traditional tunes, but we can bias the music (and dances) towards a specific country if desired - for example Wales or Scotland.

Wheelchair users can be accommodated to some extent, although this depends on the user and their helpers (if any). At a recent ceilidh, we had a wheelchair user doing the 'strip the willow' in with everybody else!
We do not need any special lighting, but if the hall lighting can be a little subdued that can help. Not too dark though - people need to see where they're going!
We usually bring our own P.A., and can set up in 45 minutes. The electrical supply must be safe, to our satisfaction; we can run everything safely off one 13 amp socket. All our equipment is PAT tested. Apart from the caller, we perform seated and so will need chairs (without arms) for the band. A decent-sized hall or open space is required for dancing. NB: the small 'disco' floors with a sloping edge (as provided by some hotels/marquee companies) are NOT suitable for ceilidh dancing. Outdoors on smooth grass or hard surfaces can work, but please liaise with us in this regard if you have an outdoor event in mind.
We are a ceilidh/twmpath band operating in North Wales, playing lively dance tunes from Wales, the UK, Ireland and beyond. We have decades of experience running events for weddings, functions, and parties in the area. Our normal line up is button accordion, bass, guitar and/or banjo, although we can usually include other instruments (e.g. fiddle) on request. A caller is essential to make sure the dancing is a success, and we have several we can call upon: English, Cymraeg, or bilingual, as appropriate to the occasion. Normally we play a mixture of material, but we can bias the music (and dances) towards a specific country if desired - for example Wales or Scotland.
