Performer Name: Carmenco

Show Name: From the Roots

Show Description

Emily Andrews (flutes) and David Massey (guitars) have reached down into their tangled musical roots and used their intuitive musicianship to create their own unique arrangements of folk songs from all over the British Isles. They let the music grow and evolve naturally, using improvisation and memory rather than written music, to respond to the aural tradition of folk music, while using the instrumental technique and beautiful sound from their classical training at the Royal Academy of Music. With flute and guitar, the words of the songs are lost, but they retain the songs’ meanings in the textures and atmospheres of the music, conjuring up the spirit of the words, like the ghost of Molly Malone still selling her cockles and mussels on the streets of Dublin… Like the best folk music, their playing brings together the old and the new: while some song arrangements are very simple with a single flute and guitar, for some songs they use a live loop pedal to record a base version, and then free themselves up to overdub improvised harmony parts and solos on different instruments, creating the widest range of colours to reflect the breadth of feeling, the light and shade, present in all folk music of the British Isles.

None necessary, but some atmospheric lighting for the concert is always nice if there are lights available at the venue.

CarmenCo is an classical music ensemble comprising Emily Andrews, flautist/mezzo; David Massey & Francisco Correa, guitars. Exploiting the rich texture of 2 guitars with or without flute or voice, as well as our skills in arranging, we perform vibrant, visual, varied yet cost-effective programmes which can easily tour low-engaged communities. We perform all our music from memory and can move around and dance while playing. “the playing is exquisite…a delightfully warm, intimate sound.” – Susan Elkin, Lark Reviews Formed in 2017, prizewinning trio CarmenCo have performed all over England, Scotland and Wales, honing their distinctive ap-proach and performing their own arrangements of orchestral piec-es, opera, folk & world music. They often perform from memory and incorporate movement, dance and storyline into their con-certs, as well as varying instrumentation from solo guitar through to voice/flute and two guitars, making their concerts and shows as unique and colourful as the players in the trio. CarmenCo grew out of the multiple prizewinning Andrews Massey flute and guitar duo (Emily and David) when they added extra guitarist Francisco Correa (himself an internationally-acclaimed soloist and chamber musician), enabling richer textures to accompany singing, and adding more variety of instrumentation. In 2019 CarmenCo received generous Arts Council England Funding to develop their Carmen show, which they have toured around Scotland, the Dorset and Somerset, Llanstadwell in Wales, and performed at the prestigious Buxton Festival. Based in Bristol, Emily also works regularly in Wales as an orchestral player with BBCNOW and Welsh National Opera.
