Performer Name: Carmina

Show Name: Carmina and Special Guests - Launch of Late Light Album

Show Description

Carmina's music blends folk, jazz and Celtic themes, performed by a group of multi-instrumentalists. The band's founders and award-winning songwriters Pippa Marland (vocals, saxophones, and whistles) and Rob King (acoustic guitar, mandola and bodhran) are celebrating a 40-year collaboration with the release of a new album, 'Late Light'. For this special show, the duo are joined by the stellar line-up of Paul Bradley (vocals and electric and acoustic guitar), Diarmaid Moynihan (Uilleann pipes and whistles) and David Gordon (piano). 'Late Light' sees the band returning to their folk roots with a selection of Irish and English traditional ballads, including 'The Parting Glass' and 'She Moved Through the Fair', and traditional tunes as well as strong original songs. The recording of the title track 'Late Light' features a number of singers from the Wye and Usk valleys who made up a community choir in the studio some of whom will join us for the finale to the concert.

We have played in St Mary's Priory before and didn't require specialist lighting, but if this is available then we would be pleased to use it.

Live, Carmina have committed themselves to becoming one of the most accessible yet innovative bands currently touring, developing their unique fusion of jazzy celtic roots to enchanting depths. The core band of Pippa Marland (vocals, saxophones, Irish whistles), Rob King (acoustic guitars, bodhran) and Paul Bradley (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, melodica) features the interplay of the two guitars and sax and whistle with gorgeous harmony vocals. The band create a real warmth on stage, with virtuoso solos played with good taste and never running amok through the arrangements that have obviously been so well crafted. Pippa's rapport with the audience lends the proceedings an intimate touch, drawing in those who might be unprepared for the diversity of the music. The combination of such superlative vocalists and musicians creates a stunning experience for those fortunate enough to be involved. Carmina have released six albums to date, two of them recorded in Dublin and produced by Irish music legend Donal Lunny. They include Weather in the Heart, My Crescent City and On a Quiet Street: Live in Ireland, all available on the major streaming platforms. They have toured internationally, appearing at venues and festivals in Australia, Spain, Belgium, Holland, and Ireland. They have been nominated for the Hot Press Best Roots Album and The Irish Rock Music Awards Best Traditional Act Awards, and received a swathe of acclaim in the press from across Europe. Their award-winning songs are published by Peter Gabriel's Real World music. They have a new album - Late Light - due for release in Spring 2025.
