Performer Name: Mei Gwynedd

Show Name: Mei Gwynedd a Band Ty Potas

Show Description

Mei lauched Sesiynnau Ty Potas in 2023, and it's turned out to be a roaring success. The show is a celebration of popular and traditional Welsh song, where the audience are encouraged to sing along! The band band can be flexible to the needs of the promoter. Smaller gigs tends to be a 5 piece set up, where as in bigger festivals we can add brass and even dancers! Mei has been performing for over 30 years, which includes breaking the Guinness Book Of Records with his version of Hei Mistar Urdd, supporting Oasis at the Principality Stadium, ruuning his own label (Recordiau JigCal), producing music, and is the leader of the highly successful Ukulele Orchestra!

Since his early teens Mei Gwynedd has performed with some of the most acclaimed bands of the Welsh rock scene, including “Beganifs”, “Big Leaves”, “Geraint Jarman” – the godfather of Welsh pop, “Sibrydion” and had supported Oasis on tour with “Y Peth” alongside actor Rhys Ifans. In this project Mei puts his unique stamp on Welsh traditional songs. More upbeat and louder, it is an exciting take on Welsh melodies and brings the genre in line with the other Celtic countries. It is an open door to audiences far and wide. “I grew up listening to bands like Tebot Piws, “Hogia’r Wyddfa”, “Mynediad Am Ddim” and “Dafydd Iwan”. We sang these traditional songs and I want to recreate that atmosphere of sitting in a bustling pub in the heart of Wales, and that is the inspiration behind “Sessions Ty Potas”! This will appeal to Welsh and non-Welsh speaking audience alike, and we put on show our greatest classics’. Since launching Band Ty Potas in May 2023, there is a real feeling that Mei has tapped into the nation’s heart by bringing a fresh and new arrangements to familiar songs. One highlight so far was the ‘secret’ after show party at the National Eisteddfod 2023 where a 2000 capacity tent was filled to the brim and the relationship between the band and the audience truly unique.
