Show Name: A Child's Christmas

A Child's Christmas is a double bill of two wonderful Christmas stories by two famous Welshmen - Dylan Thomas and Richard Burton. Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales is a seasonal favourite in Wales and beyond, and this wonderful evocation of a child's delight at the festive season has become famous the world over. Richard Burton's A Christmas Story is not as well known, but is a funny, warm and thought provoking account of childhood memories...in many ways it was a conscious response to Dylan Thomas' own childhood narrative. Told by award-winning actors Adrian Metcalfe and James Scannell, this evening's festive entertainment has been described by the press as 'masterful story-telling' and 'perfect festive fare'. A Child’s Christmas Part One: A Child’s Christmas in Wales Part Two: A Christmas Story ‘Snow grew overnight on the roofs of the houses’ Dylan Thomas and Richard Burton are icons of twentieth century Wales. They have produced stories about Christmas in Wales that rival Charles Dickens’ short stories about Christmas in nineteenth century England. In some ways Thomas and Burton can be accused of inventing Christmas in exactly the same way Dickens is responsible for creating the Christmas that we enjoy so wholeheartedly. For all of that, however, Burton and Thomas were actors whose love of words shines through these two short but heart warming stories. Described by the South Wales Evening Post as ‘a joy’, this ‘Welsh Icons Xmas show’ performed by two actors has proved hugely popular. ‘There were very few white Christmases in my part of Wales’….

Performer Name: Lighthouse Theatre Ltd

Lighthouse creates ambitious, quirky and inventive performances with community at its heart. We tour high quality, entertaining and accessible work throughout Wales, often with a local theme. As well as performing in traditional theatre settings, we are excited by performing in pubs, parlours, the open-air and immersive spaces. In 2011, we performed our first show – a three-person adaptation of Noel Coward's Still Life. In 2024, we were awarded the Arts and Business Cymru, Arts in the Community Award for our work with Cardiff Harbour Authority on The Tides Are A-Changing. This production will help us grow in a number of ways - we are returning to a format that our audiences really appreciate but with a title that atrracts its own considerable support base - it will be a huge challeneg for us but one that we anticipate with relish. We continue to attract an audience with a wide age range nationally but remain firmly rooted in our home base, offering theatre in conventional spaces as well as poetry, plays and fund-raisers in local pubs and community centres and this work continues alongside our raised profile.
